Abstract
Higher education instructors need to be aware of the prevalence and impact of trauma and how students’ past and present experiences affect their ability to learn. Trauma-informed practices enable educators to recognize that students may have difficulty completing basic tasks amid a crisis. The expression, Maslow before Bloom, means students’ basic needs come before their ability to learn. This presentation discusses how trauma affects learning, identifies the six guiding principles of trauma-informed teaching, and provides educational practices that promote trauma-informed pedagogies.
Objectives
· Discuss how trauma affects teaching and learning
· Identify the principles of trauma-informed teaching
· Apply trauma-informed practices in the higher education classroom
· Create an action statement for course syllabi demonstrating trauma-aware teaching priorities
